Beyond Hunger: Understanding, Treating & Coping with Binge Eating Disorder

In honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, The National Eating Disorders Association is proud to partner with the Eating Disorder Treatment Collaborative to bring this free and important conference to New York.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder in the United States, affecting nearly 5 million women and 3 million men. In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) formally recognized Binge Eating Disorder as a diagnosis in its DSM-5 publication. This recognition provided validation and recognition to the millions of people suffering in silence and shame around this often secret condition.

At this conference, you will learn more about how to recognize, treat, cope, and recover from BED. Speakers will discuss the psychological, behavioral, genetic and physiological factors that may perpetuate BED, as well as issues relevant to access-to-care, the role of pharmacological interventions, and the important nuances of BED that separate it from other forms of eating disorders. Treatment strategies and resources will be made available.

Chevese Turner - Chevese Turner is a nationally recognized activist who shares her journey with binge eating disorder and the insidious effects of bullying and weight stigma on those living in larger bodies. Recognizing the need for a community in which individuals with BED could find strength and support and an organization to advocate on behalf of these individuals and the providers who treat them, Chevese founded The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) in 2008. Together with BEDA and its growing community of practitioners, educators, researchers and advocates, Chevese works to raise awareness of the most common eating disorder and weight stigma; influence national policy on health and well-being; increase access to care; and provide training, resources, and support for those who have and those who treat BED. Her professional experience includes work in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, political, and non-profit arenas.
