Moving from anxiety, perfectionism and fear to self-care and acceptance.
And the journey continues.
Why am I doing the August 25 Kansas City NEDA Walk? Because I'm a survivor of a 20-year battle with anorexia who believes in NEDA's mission.
Because the stigma surrounding mental illness - especially eating disorders - cripples recovery and stops us from openly seeking help, from sharing our experiences, and from chasing away isolation through deep connection. The stigma must end.
It's five years since I first considered myself recovered. Each day is a choice to remain in this good space, and I’m dedicated to talking openly about my struggle and helping others however I can.
But I still hold back around professional colleagues because I fear (sadly, the fear is founded) that I’ll be seen as weak, unintelligent, incompetent, not a leader, not worthy...or so my unwelcome old 'friend' Ana (anorexia) would have me believe. The healthy me knows the opposite is true, and that Ana’s opinions are lies to keep me silent and compliant. This year, I'm breaking that professional silence and sharing without shame.
Healthy me has big goals to do big things for others.
$100 per year for my 20-year illness + $100 for each year of recovery= $2,500
$100 per year is dirt cheap! I'd have paid that many times over to get rid of Ana. She was NOT my friend. But you are, and I'm immeasurably grateful.
Helping me reach my ambitious fundraising goal is a way for you to demonstrate that you, too, care about helping women, girls, men, and boys struggling with an eating disorder. Eating disorders are symptoms of deeper internal or external issues: fear, anxiety, paralyzing self-doubt, the "not enough" cycle, negative perfectionism, abuse/bullying, body shame, control, and so much else. Eating disorders are very personal. And they are deadly. But they don't have to be.
Contributing through this website is simple, fast and secure. It’s also the most efficient way to support my fundraising goal.
Through it all, I'm humbled and amazed that this year makes 21 years of marriage with my best friend, my in-house musician, my favorite goofball, the love of my life, and my NEDAWalk buddy. Bob, you are a superstar.
Thank you so much for your support. Help me overflow my thermometer by forwarding my page to anyone you think might want to join in the cause with us.
With love and gratitude,
The National Eating Disorders Association's vision is to eliminate eating disorders globally by promoting positive body image and self-esteem and by discouraging dieting behaviors, drive for thinness, and body dissatisfaction. NEDA is recognized and supported by sufferers, families, health care professionals and educators throughout the world. As you can see, raising awareness for this organization is critical in order to create a world where all women, girls and men feel confident about their bodies and are embraced for who they are as individuals, not what they look like. NEDA provides critical programs and services to support individuals and families affected by eating disorders like their National toll-free Helpline, Annual Conference, Parents, Families and Friends Netowrk, NEDA Navigators and Preventative Tookits for Parents and Educators.
