Lauren Sommer Personal Page
Hello friends and family, thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page! Below is some general NEDA walk info, but I just wanted to share a bit about my own journey. I have been in treatment since my 2016 diagnosis of ARFID and anxiety, and although that time was riddled with relapses, I finally took this Winter 2018 quarter off from UW. In an attempt to get it under control once and for all. Since January of this year I have been in a 50hr/week treatment program, and in that time, I have learned so much more about disordered eating behaviors and the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement than I ever realized existed.
The pervasive messages in our society and media about the “ideal” body and diet culture are not only damaging to the confidence and mental health of many, many Americans, but are also built on the back of a health measurement that has no scientific backing and was originally introduced into our health industry by insurance companies in order to charge people more — BMI! That’s right; it’s a nonsense measurement that doesn’t take into account how genetics, weight distribution/muscle mass, and bone density affect one’s weight.
I could go on at length about the various ways our culture feeds into disordered relationships with eating, but I’ll leave you with this statistic: 1 in 4 chronic dieters will develop an eating disorder in their life, yet they only receive $1 in funding to every $70 that other mental health disorders receive. Please help me spread awareness about these very harmful and wide-reaching problems!!!
Did you know that 30 million men and women will suffer from an eating disorder in their lifetimes? This is one of the many reasons that I am participating in a NEDA Walk to benefit the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA)!
NEDA is a nonprofit organization that provides lifesaving programs and services to individuals and families affected by eating disorders. NEDA is dedicated to erasing the stigma surrounding eating disorders, promoting positive body image and discouraging dangerous diet behaviors.
I am asking for your support to help me reach my fundraising goal. Donating to my fundraising page is a way for you to not only show your support for me, but also to show your support for the millions of individuals and families affected by eating disorders.
Since 2009, NEDA Walks have been bringing communities together nationwide in the fight against eating disorders. NEDA Walks raise funds for NEDA’s lifesaving programs that help thousands of people every day!
Your contribution will help fund NEDA’s national Helpline, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, NEDA Navigators and countless other lifesaving programs.
Any amount you can contribute will make a difference in the fight against eating disorders. With your help, I am one step closer to my fundraising goal.
Thank you so much for your support! You can also help by forwarding my page to anyone you think might want to support the cause with us!
